Pelle the Conqueror Length: 3:17
Description: Beautiful clip from the closing scene of the 1987 Scandinavian film "Pelle the Conqueror" based on the first part of a story by Martin Andersen Nexoe which spreads over four novels, and follows the life of a Swedish boy Pelle Karlsson (Pelle Hvenegaard) who is brought to Denmark by his father Lasse Karlsson (Max von Sydow) due to hard times in Sweden. Documenting the sheer hell they have to go through together and how it forges the boys spirit, this adaption of the early story points to the meaning of the "Conqueror" title. Unfortunately, only this first film was made and it pulls no punches, with a brutal look into the hard lives of some Europeans from not "so" long ago in our history. This closing scene is particularly powerful, and brings tears to my eyes every time. Heart wrenchingly beautiful music by Stefan Nilsson, and a scene which promises so much hope due to its setting. A new horizon of posibility laid out for Pelle at last. I love it!!
